4 steps on ladder

If you want to climb to the top of the real estate ladder, and have fun doing it, there are four steps you need to take.

Founder of PowerNET IT Solutions, Jacob Ohlson, provided essential some tips for overcoming career roadblocks to REB's sister publication My Business on the My Business Podcast.

Customers come first
Mr Ohlson, whose first two clients have stayed with his business for more 20 years, says if you prioritise customer service, you will have customers for life.

“That’s where [my] business has grown over 22 years, because by providing that constant good-quality service every single day, they stay with you.”

Impressing clients with your service will also result in more referral business, something many PMs strive for but struggle to achieve.

Be prepared to let go
As you build your business, you need to accept the fact that you will not be able to control everything. “Now it’s good that I don’t have to know everything,” Mr Ohlson said with reference to his expanding business.

The temptation to micromanage can be strong for people who are used to being across every aspect of their work, but delegating less important tasks will help you enjoy your work and boost your productivity.

Embrace change
“I’ve had to change management because I haven’t been happy with who I’ve been with and working with,” Mr Ohlson said. He encourages people to embrace change, especially if something doesn’t feel right in their business.

If you are coming into work every day and not enjoying it, find out why and don’t be afraid to challenge that factor. You will work harder in a job you love, so it’s important to make that a priority.

Remember your passion
“You cannot work crazy hours a day … and love doing it if you don’t have a passion,” Mr Ohlson said.

He credits his success to hard work, dedication and luck, saying that loving his work is what makes him strive to improve.

“I was just very lucky to find something that I have a passion for … it keeps me more and more engaged and interested.”
