What’s standing between you and your dreams?

What’s your big audacious career dream? Is it to write $1 million GCI, lead a team, start your own agency, create a legacy?

Is it financial security, industry renown, sheer ambition to be the best, or is it something else?

Whether we consciously recognise it or not, each of us has a reason for being in real estate that drives us and most of us have goals and ambitions for what we hope to achieve in the future.

But that’s not to say those things come quickly or easily. Sometimes it can be hard to see how you go from where you are now to where you want to be, and it begs the question, what’s standing between you and your dreams.

Might it be motivation?

If you have big goals but you’re finding them hard to achieve, some might say it’s a lack of motivation causing your inertia.

But in my experience, that’s rarely the case. In fact, I’d argue ‘motivation’ is for amateurs. It’s simply too fleeting and hard to sustain to be a solid foundation of a lengthy and successful career.

When you have it, motivation is an incredible catalyst for getting things done, but it’s just too unpredictable to rely on, especially in a career that spans years, not days or weeks.

Instead, the foundation of prolonged success comes down to embracing the habits of professionalism, each and every day.

In a nutshell, that means:

  • Scheduling the activities you know you must do
  • Goal setting to create momentum
  • Embracing routine, so you don’t think, you just do
  • Finding accountability buddies and mentors to keep you on track
  • Seeking and finding daily inspiration

Could it be training?

If you don’t have the skills you need to achieve the success you want, you’re simply never going to get where you want to go, and this is an industry that requires regular upskilling.

As agents, property managers and real estate professionals, we should be constantly ‘sharpening the sword’.

We should be honing the basics. We should be seeking out the best tools and techniques that enable us to be the ‘go-to’ real estate professionals in our marketplace.

I’m not talking about constantly looking to the latest bright shiny fad comes our way, but rather understanding exactly what works and then practising and honing that to ensure we are really, really good at what we do.

Is it fear?

Sometimes the thing that’s holding us back is fear, plain and simple. It’s that hesitancy to take a risk, that reticence to put ourselves out there, or that nervousness about the unknown.

Too often, we let that fear imprison us in our comfort zone, and let’s be honest, the comfort zone isn’t a place where greatness occurs.

Conquering fears is about ensuring we become great at what we do, and the only way to get great at something is to feel the fear and doing it anyway. Take the leap.

It’s about moving forward, experiencing that feeling of inadequacy because something is outside our skill set or beyond our comfort zone, practising that activity, accepting failure if it occurs and learning from that experience.

Facing that fear is about accepting you may not get it right but pushing through regardless.

It’s about taking a calculated risk, in the knowledge there’s a good chance we’ll later regret the things we didn’t do, rather than those we did.

Is it lack of support?

I sometimes hear agents lament that real estate can be a lonely gig, but that doesn’t have to be the case.

This is an industry packed full of willing mentors, accountability buddies, events, trainers, and resources all dedicated to bringing industry professionals together to help people achieve their best.

And that support can be invaluable. Many top agents and successful agency leaders note they have been mentored on their path to success.

If you have a dream that you hope will become a reality, finding a suitable mentor, coach or buddy can be a great way to keep you on track.
