With Australia in the midst of a housing crisis, he’s taking on the role of strategic partnerships ambassador for the Tenancy Skills Institute.
The chairman of the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) board, who has operated within the real estate industry for more than four decades, is taking on the role “at a crucial time”, according to Tenancy Skills Institute CEO Paul Tommasini.
Noting Queensland is currently facing “an unprecedented housing crisis”, Tommasini said Brewer’s appointment would deepen the institute’s relationships with the real estate profession.
He will reportedly leverage his extensive industry experience to foster stronger relationships between the Tenancy Skills Institute, the real estate profession, and other related organisations.
Tenancy Skills Institute said Brewer had already facilitated a number of productive meetings between property managers and community groups.
Brewer believes “we need a unified approach to address this housing crisis”.
“Collaboration between community groups and the real estate sector is essential,” he said.
His appointment comes as the institute celebrates a milestone – it’s seen 20,000 students engage with its education programs. Just last week, it delivered an Introduction to Renting short course to 700 students at Kelvin Grove State College.
Brewer said “education is the key, and we must expand our efforts”, before urging the entire real estate profession and all stakeholders to support the work being done by the Tenancy Skills Institute.
Tenancy Skills Institute’s online/in-person program focuses on five areas identified by property managers as crucial for successful tenancies.
They centre around effective communication, renter rights and responsibilities, renting with others, cleaning and maintenance, and finances and budgeting.
Tommasini said the goal is to make the free certificate course “accessible to all Queenslanders”.
“We aim to reduce the number of at-risk tenancies and create a more equitable rental landscape. With the rental market under immense pressure, these skills are more important than ever,” he concluded.
