The industry made plenty of headlines late in the year, with some agents caught in legal strife and others conducting campaigns for high-profile homes.

Onthehouse chief executive Michael Fredericks resigned after feeling he had lost the support of his board due to a legal battle.

Two Western Australian agencies were slapped with fines after being found guilty of employing unlicensed staff.

A pair of prominent Sydney agents retained the services of a QC to claw back nearly $1 million of commission payments from just one sale.

Victoria’s government threatened agents with fines of up to $29,000 for underquoting if it won the 29 November election – which it didn’t.

Meanwhile, one of Australia’s top agents organised the sale of a 5,500 square metre ‘trophy’ home in the exclusive Melbourne suburb of Toorak.

Another Melbourne agent was rewarded for doggedly chasing the business of comedian Dave ‘Hughesy’ Hughes over 18 months.

Over in Sydney, controversial radio and TV star Kyle Sandilands turned to a trusted agent to find a buyer for his lavish Sydney home.

An even more prominent sale occurred on the other side of the city, when a stunning beachside apartment sold for more than $21 million in Bondi.

The two big listings portals also made news during the final three months of 2014.

In October, Domain and realestate.com.au traded blows over market share after Domain claimed it would soon overtake its fierce rival.

The following month, realestate.com.au announced changes to its premier pricing model.

In December, the Real Estate Institute of Australia warned agents they could face $50,000 legal bills if REA Group challenged them over their domain names.
